A check engine light means the vehicle’s computer has detected a condition outside its expected range. The stored trouble code can identify the system involved, but it usually does not identify the failed part by itself.
Steady light versus flashing light
A steady light often means the vehicle has recorded a fault that should be diagnosed soon. If the vehicle drives differently, runs roughly, loses power, overheats, or shows another warning, stop and seek assistance rather than continuing to drive.
A flashing check engine light can indicate a condition that may damage the catalytic converter. Reduce load, find a safe place to stop, and arrange professional guidance.
Never ignore overheating, low oil pressure, severe shaking, smoke, or unusual mechanical noise—even if the check engine light is the only warning illuminated.
What a diagnostic code can and cannot tell you
A code points the technician toward a circuit, sensor reading, cylinder, or operating condition. Testing may still be needed to determine whether the cause is wiring, a connection, a vacuum leak, fuel delivery, ignition, a sensor, or another condition.
Information that helps the technician
- When the light first appeared
- Whether it is steady or flashing
- Any recent fuel stop, repair, battery replacement, or maintenance
- Changes in starting, idle, acceleration, fuel economy, or shifting
- The speed, weather, and driving conditions when the concern occurs
Avoid clearing the light before the appointment
Disconnecting the battery or clearing codes can erase useful fault information and readiness data. Leaving the information intact may help the diagnostic process.
